Your 5 Step Guide for Happy and Healthy Plants
1. Organize:
Take the coconut coir out of its packaging and arrange it evenly in the grow container. Your kit should come with 11 little packs of coconut coir circular blocks. Coconut coir offers numerous benefits for gardening. It's a sustainable alternative to peat moss, boasting excellent water retention and aeration, promoting healthy root growth and nutrient absorption. Its neutral pH makes it versatile for various plants and soil types.
2. Water:
Add two cups of water to the coconut coir and allow it to expand. If you have the kit for kiddos, you'll fill up your watering can two times. If you have the spray bottle, you could fill it up 8 times. It looks really cool as the coconut coir expands and absorbs the water. It's like a cool magic trick. Click this video to see the absorption process.
Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that coconut coir is often used in gardening because it can hold up to 10 times its weight in water? That's like a sponge on a mission! 🌴😄
3. Spread:
Use the provided rake tool or shovel to smooth out any clumps of coconut coir, creating a flat surface for the seeds.
4. Sow Seeds:
Sprinkle your seeds onto the prepared surface of coconut coir. It is recommended that you sow seeds about an 1/8th of an inch deep. However, if you pour the seeds directly onto the soil and then use the rake to push the seeds down and rake the coconut coir over the seeds, it makes it so much simpler.
5. Protect:
Gently use the rake to lightly cover the seeds with the coconut coir, ensuring an even layer. Place the dome on top to retain moisture and put the container in a warm place to promote germination. Sunlight is extremely important as the sprouts start to break through, but for now the warmth is all these seedlings need.
Following these steps will help you successfully grow strong and healthy sprouts. This video will give you a visual aid through the process.
